The Molecular Genetics Laboratory (MGene Lab) was setup in 2015 at Eginition University Hospital, as the newest research laboratory affiliated to the Department of Psychiatry at the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens School of Medicine (web link). MGene Lab was established with the premise to pursue translational biomedical research in the field of molecular psychiatry and neuropsychiatric genomics.
The primary goal of our lab is to conduct high quality genetic research related to human behavior, brain neurophysiology and psychopathology. Ongoing research projects aim to examine the contribution of genetic variation on cognitive processes and behavioral aspects linked to psychiatric disorders. We are interested in the identification of genetic loci and environmental risk factors which may increase the proneness to develop major mental disorders, in particular Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder.
By integrating data from large-scale genomic analyses, detailed clinical records, cognitive and psychometric assessments, we explore the complex interactions between genetic predisposition and environmental influences and how this interplay may give rise to neuropsychiatric symptoms in vulnerable individuals.
MGene Lab has been collaborating with research groups in academic institutions within Greece as well as internationally.
We will be happy to get in contact with you and discuss potential future collaborations!
